EVERY STUDENT IS DIFFERENT!
Alternative assessment occurs when the teacher finds out different ways in which students can be evaluated during the term. This alternative make the students be involved in their own assessment as they can mention methods to have a better grade, and allows students to have an individualized achievement in the activities, so every student has the opportunity to develop their skills in any area as the teacher have a different way to graade. Alternatives are better than the traditional way of grading students because in the traditional way, students were mechanical scored with an asnwer key that could not be changed and that was for all the students (every one was under the same criteria).
Some alternative assessment methods are:
- Portfolios
- Peer assessment
- Self-reports
- Anecdotal records
- Attitude scale
- Group tests
When implementing this methodology, teachers have to understand the students’ learning processes, have to be the models of alternative assessment and the developers of the different ways to assess students, while the students need to be open-minded to the new activities that are going to be implemented and have to undrestand that this can be a help for them, so they have to take advantage of it.
